Q-CERT Gives Presentations on IPv6, DDoS

April 23, 2008

Two Q-CERT employees were featured speakers at the latest Middle East Network Operators Group (MENOG) meeting, held in Salimya, Kuwait, 14-17 April. They were Noora Yousuf Al-Abdullah, a computer engineer working with the Incident Management group, and Dr. Daniel C. Phelps, an information scientist working with Outreach and Training.

Dr. Phelps and Eng. Al-Abdullah provided a tutorial on the security implications of IPv6. The 90-minute tutorial introduced the audience to differences in both planning and executing security in IPv6 as compared to IPv4, the most widely used IP protocol on the Internet. Later, Eng. Al-Abdullah gave a presentation on distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, highlighting lessons learned from experiences in Qatar and encouraging future collaboration between Internet service providers (ISPs) and regional and national CERTs in managing these incidents when they occur.

The MENOG meetings offer network engineers, operators, and analysts in the region an exceptional opportunity to share their experiences, knowledge, and ideas for cross-regional cooperation. MENOG is sponsored by RIPE NCC, which is one of five regional Internet registries (RIRs) providing Internet resource allocations, registration services, and coordination activities that support the operation of the Internet globally.
